John T. Roman, Ph.d.

John T. Roman, Ph.D. is a performance psychology consultant. From rising high school talent to elite professionals, Dr. Roman helps performers make quicker decisions, stay locked in under pressure, and recover when things go wrong. He creates an environment where individuals are focused, motivated, and steadily supported. He uses custom data-based strategies that are feedback-rich and designed for game-ready skills, focusing on visual performance, attention, and emotion control. He works with individuals aged 12 and up, offering developmentally tailored approaches appropriate for each stage of growth up to the elite-professional level.

Dr. Roman was the goalkeeper coach for Florida Gator Soccer (2016-2021) and worked in football with LSU’s WRs (2019, national champions). Outside of sport, he designed training for Army drone operators in high-stress environments (2022-2025) and edited the book Deliberate Discomfort: How U.S. Special Operations Forces Overcome Fear and Dare to Win by Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable (2020). He now supports NWSL players with the Orlando Pride (2025-present).

Dr. Roman specializes in goalkeepers and goaltenders across sports, helping to build the mental sharpness, timing, and emotional control needed to thrive in high-pressure, last-line-of-defense roles. Dr. Roman’s consulting practice includes clients at the Olympic/Professional, Division I, elite club, and high school levels, as well as with Broadway performers employing Laban Movement Analysis and Alexander Technique. At the Olympic/Professional Level, he has worked in archery, football (NFL), and soccer (NWSL, WSL). In Division I, he worked primarily in the SEC and Big Ten with the Florida Gators, LSU, and The Ohio State University football programs. For youth athletes, he works with Apex Performance Sports Institute to train mental skills in the top 50 recruited female soccer players in Florida.

Dr. Roman’s practice is conducted both remotely over video and in-person. He routinely travels to work with individuals and teams in Atlanta, Florida, New York metropolitan, and DC- Maryland-Virginia (DMV) areas. He sees athletes from all sports at all levels of ability, especially in baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer, and theatrical performance.

Dr. Roman is an instructor at Columbus State University and routinely conducts research with the Department of Defense and academic partners. He is also an avid skier, cyclist, and chocolate cake afficionado.
